Bifold closet doors have five main disadvantages: track misalignment, limited access width, hollow-core flex, poor sound insulation, and hardware that requires periodic adjustment — all of which compound in cheaper, hollow-core models.

The biggest day-to-day frustration with bifold closet doors is hardware reliability. The top pivot pin and bottom bracket system that guides the panels is sensitive to installation tolerances, and hollow-core doors — the most common type sold — flex enough when swinging that panels drift off track over time. Limited clearance is a structural constraint: bifold doors only open to roughly half the closet width, which restricts access compared to a single sliding or hinged door. Sound insulation is another weak point; most bifold doors are hollow-core and rated well below the 25dB threshold a solid-core door delivers.
